UNIABUJA Students Laud ASUU Over Scholarship Disbursement

The students of the University of Abuja commended the branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the institution for disbursing a scholarship to some of the selected students.

It is reported that the Federation recently awarded scholarships to nine students studying at the institution, based on the directives of its National Authority.

Some students who spoke to LEADERSHIP said the scholarship would help improve their financial situation.

Adenabu Shaibu Maryam, a 400-level student in the Department of Agricultural Economics, praised the union for funding the scholarship.

“I can say ASU is one of the best unions I’ve seen. Mary says that having this mindset to remember people like us shows that their motivation is to give us a better life.

To Ibaku Ekene Paschal, a 200-level student in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, “Before the scholarship, he could not get money to finance himself in tasks of small things, purchase of materials and other necessary things.”

However, through the scholarship, he expressed confidence in doing all of these things with ease.

Earlier, Dr. Qassem Omar, president of the Arizona State University branch, said that the union embarked on the project in order to meet the financial needs of the students.

“We chose one indigent to give him a scholarship of N100,000 and that’s what we did and you can see again we have 8 more including branch and we will take responsibility.

“So overall, we’re happy to embark on the issue of awarding scholarships to needy students, to people who need that money, and that’s basically why we’ve been saying that the federal government should stop increasing tuition fees.

“There are people who need a university education today and do not have the means to take it, so it is the responsibility of the government to make sure that it funds education in Nigeria because it is something we must do and we must do.

“The scholarship is on an annual basis and it has been institutionalized in our consortium in which we start all public universities. The selection process is based on advertisements where indigent students will apply. The process will start from advertisement and then followed by interviews and we have reached the final selection,” he added.

Dr. Qasim Amaru, President of the University of Oniabauga presents the scholarship check to one of the beneficiary students in Abuja.
