Several groups gather at Salt Lake Chamber to protest Utah Inland Port

A LIVE REPORT. GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE. I'M SURAE CHINN. Glen: I'M GLEN MILLS. GOOD TO HAVE YOU WITH US. ONE HAS BEEN ARRESTED AS HUNDREDS OF PROTESTERS DESCEND ON THE SALT LAKE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, DENOUNCING THE CREATION OF THE INLAND PORT IN SALT LAKE CITY'S NORTHWEST QUADRANT. Surae: THEY SAY THE PORT WILL DESTROY THE ENVIRONMENT AND MAKE LOWER INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS UNLIVABLE. ABC 4 NEWS'S ANDREW REESER LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT AND LIVE NOW OUTSIDE OF THE SALT LAKE CHAMBER. ANDREW. Andrew: THAT'S RIGHT. AND THAT NUMBER THAT YOU MENTIONED, ONE ARRESTED, HAS CHANGED JUST WITHIN THE LAST 30 SECONDS TO ABOUT FOUR PEOPLE ARRESTED. TAKE A LOOK BEHIND ME. WE ARE ON 4th SOUTH, WHICH RIGHT NOW HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN IN BETWEEN STATE STREET AND 2nd EAST. AS SALT LAKE CITY POLICE KICKED THESE PROTESTERS OUT OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. I WANT TO GO TO VIDEO THAT WE SHOT EARLIER TODAY, ABOUT AN HOUR AGO. IT WAS CHAOS AS THRONGS OF PROTESTERS DESCENDED TO THE FOURTH FLOOR OF THE CHAMBER BUILDING. THEY'RE DEMANDING THE INLAND PORT AUTHORITY BE DISBANDED AND ABANDONED. THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, WE'RE HEARING, POSTPONED THEIR SCHEDULED MEETING AHEAD OF THE MASSIVE PROTEST. SALT LAKE CITY POLICE DEMANDING PROTESTERS CLEAR OUT, OR THEY WOULD ARREST EVERYONE. WE WITNESSED ONE MAN BEING DETAINED BY POLICE. HE WAS TACKLED TO THE GROUND. THIS ALL BEGAN AT THE CITY COUNTY BUILDING ACROSS THE STREET. AND PROTESTERS WENT TO THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, WHERE THE MEETING WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN HELD TODAY, TO PROTEST THE INLAND PORT. TAKE A LISTEN. WE DO NOT WANT AN INLAND PORT! WE DON'T WANT INCREASED TRAFFIC, INCREASED POLLUTION AND INCREASED HEALTH RISKS FOR OUR PEOPLE! THAT'S WHY WE'RE HERE TODAY. [SOUNDS OF PROTESTS] Andrew: PROPONENTS SAY IT WILL BOOST UTAH'S ECONOMY BY PROVIDING A DRY PORT TO EXPORT AND IMPORT GOODS FROM COASTAL SEA PORTS. INLAND PORTS HAVE BEEN CREATED IN SOUTH CAROLINA, NEAR THE COAST. THEY SAY THIS WILL BOOST UTAH'S ECONOMY. AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT THIS. AS I MENTIONED, FOUR PEOPLE AT LEAST THAT WE'VE SEEN ARRESTED. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE DURING INLAND PORT PROTESTS. WE'LL BE HERE THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON. ONCE AGAIN, I WANT TO MENTION, THERE IS A TRAFFIC ALERT HERE. 4th SOUTH IN FRONT OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN FOR NOW. UTA TRAX IS STILL RUNNING. POLICE ARE MAKING SURE EVERYONE STAYS SAFE. WE'LL HAVE MORE ON THIS THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON. FOR NOW, REPORTING LIVE IN SALT LAKE CITY, ANDREW REESER, ABC 4 NEWS.
