Gov touts merits of UK unis after loan extension

(CNS): Governor Martyn Roper has encouraged Caymanian students to apply to British universities, announcing that students from overseas territories who plan to study in England in the 2022-2023 academic year will be eligible for tuition fee loans. This loan offer does not appear to apply to students at colleges in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Caymanian students studying in the UK already benefit from being charged the same as British students for their tuition fees, which are much lower than international students fees, but they will now also be eligible to apply for a loan to help them pay this fee if they attend university in England.

“This decision makes it even more attractive for Caymanians to continue their education at one of the great English universities, and in doing so strengthens the UK’s ties with the Cayman Islands,” Roper said.

There are currently 300 Cayman Islands students in the UK. Now that the UK has made tuition fees loans available for Overseas Territories students from the academic year 22/23, I hope there will be more. This policy demonstrates the UK’s commitment to supporting British Overseas Territories students and will help more people study at an academic institution in England.”

Domestic students studying abroad who meet the criteria are eligible to receive government scholarships of up to 30,000 CI annually. For students studying at UK universities, the tuition fee is £9,250, as for British students in the UK, which is about CI$10,663.
