– Welcome Jamie. – Thank you Jamie. – So, let’s do a couple breaths together as we prepare for opening up this target
with some EMDR reprocessing. So what are you feeling in this moment? Would you like to do just some kind of standard deep breathing, or would it help to do your release breath to really get you
settled in as a resource? – The standard breathing
will be just fine. – Okay.
– I’m feeling pretty relaxed. – Okay, I’m gonna have you
set the pace for the breath. You can close your eyes or leave ’em open and then I’ll follow along with you. – Okay. – And what are you noticing now, Jamie? – I’m feeling relaxed. – Okay, so I’d just like to remind you that you’re surrounded by several of your other resources. I see you have the fox in hand, we have your oils, the art materials. And as we established coming to your magical safe place– – Right. – Is a good anchor to use if
you wanna stop at any time or pause rather at any time, or if we should run out of time. And I’d like to remind you, of course that you’re in control
of this the whole time. So if at any point you do wanna stop the active trauma reprocessing, is there a stop sign or signal that you can give me that indicates let’s pause this for now and come back to the magical place? – Well maybe, just one of my hands or verbalizing stop–
– Okay. – Or pause.
– Okay, if you do verbalize stop or pause, I
will likely clarify first just to make sure it’s not
a part of the memory itself. But, yeah, we’ll figure it out– – Okay.
– As we go. – So thank you for that. All right, so based on the client history and what we collaboratively worked on, we’re going to begin this
target setup with that memory from age seven and you being in the box, and I’m gonna ask you some questions according to the standard
EMDR protocol here to get this set up. And I’d like to remind
you, you can give me as much or as little detail as you want during these questions. Some of them will involve kind of crazy number questions with scales and if you need to see the number chart, I have it handy, just let me know. Okay, so, bringing up that target of being about seven years
old, being in the box. Looking back on it now, what image represents the
worst part of the target? – Image per se or thought, or? – If you can’t come up with a clear image, you also have the option
of doing the worst part. Like it may be that a sound, a sensation, a thought is a little more charged, if there’s not really an image available. – Oh, well, and I don’t
necessarily come up with images, its more body feelings. – So, what’s jumping out
at you as the worst part? – I’m uncomfortable. – Okay. – But not only a cognition,
but feeling trapped because I know someone
else has to unlock the box. – Okay. So, nice flow into the next question. When you bring up that worst part, uncomfortable, feeling trapped. – Mm-hmm. – What is the negative belief
that goes along with it? – I’m bad. – Okay. I’m unworthy. It’s my fault. – Okay. – So, I’m bad, I am
unworthy, it’s my fault. Of those three, which one
seems to carry the most charge? – It’s my fault. – Okay. So when you think of the
worst part of the target, what would you like to
believe about yourself now? – I’m okay, and it’s not my fault, it wasn’t my fault. – Okay. – I was a kid. And these other people were adults. – So what is your gut level feeling of how true that positive
belief is right now as you look back on the
image or worst part, with one being completely false, and seven being completely true? – The adult part of me says– (laughing) – Mm-hmm. – It’s completely untrue.
– Okay. However the little kid says they told me it
was my fault, I was bad, that I was a bully. – Okay. – The adults they, they know more than I do, they know better than I do. – Okay. – So what I’m hearing is the adult part would rank the positive,
the I am okay, I was a kid. – Mm-hmm. – The adult part would rank
that pretty completely true. – Mm-hmm. – Okay. – But the kid parts, it’s lower. – Yeah, substantially.
– Okay. Okay. – Just for the sake of demo– – Mm-hmm. – If you had to try to
give me a gut level number, where would you put it, one to seven, kind of like as a sum total? – Right, and one? One is completely false.
– false. And seven is completely true.
– Seven is completely true. – The adult’s more a one. – Mm-hmm. The kid’s, more of a six. – Okay, so to, this is
just EMDR craziness. – Mm-hmm. – So this is the truth of
the positive statement. So I am okay. – Okay, the truth of
the positive statement. – Yeah, so one is completely false, seven is completely true. I am okay. – Now the adult looking back–
– Mmm hmm. – I was not–
– Mmm hmm. – Okay. So that the positive
statement would be false. – Mm-hmm. – Is that making sense? And the little kids definitely didn’t feel safe.
– Mmm hmm. So, and then I was okay, so the little kid’s would say she was completely false,
does that make sense? – Makes sense enough for now. It’s okay.
– Okay. – Well, I don’t get too hung
up on this at this juncture. I’m hearing enough clarity to know that the adults believe one thing, the kids believe another thing– – Okay.
– And we’ll figure it as we go. So what emotions do you feel when you link that worst part with the negative belief of it’s my fault? What emotions do you feel
when you link the worst part with the negative belief of it’s my fault? – Terrified. – Okay. – I’m bad enough they’re
gonna leave me here, I’m gonna die. – Okay. And what is your gut level of disturbance as you bring up the worst part, the negative belief and
the emotions all together, with zero being no disturbance or neutral, and ten being the worst
that you can imagine? – It’s getting about a seven or so. – Okay, and what are you
noticing in your body in this moment, as you bring
up the image or worst part, the negative belief and
the emotions all together? – I’m tearing up, I’m feeling tense. – Okay. – My stomach feels weird. – Okay. – I’m feeling really scared.
– Okay. Okay, so just stay with
those body sensations, Jamie. – And bring those up or stay with them, together with the negative
belief of, it’s my fault, and the worst part of the memory, and just notice whatever it is you notice, as I begin the stimulation. Breath. (both deeply breathing) What are you noticing now? – I’m hungry. – Go with that, I’m hungry. (Jamie S. inhaling) Take another breath like that. (both inhaling) (both exhaling) What are you noticing now, Jamie? – (exhaling) I’m concerned

sensation on the next one, and if you need to move
your body in any way, I saw you twitching a
little bit on the last one, just let that movement happen. – Okay. (sighing) (both inhaling)

back in with the target then. – Mmm-hmm. – So bringing back up the original target, it wasn’t really an image,
but more the worst part, where we began. In this moment, where are you, or where would you rate
the distress, zero to 10, if zero is nothing or neutral, and 10 is the worst that you can imagine? – One.
– Okay. Anything that keeps it
from going lower than one? – Believing them, they were adults. – Mmm-hmm.
– They supposedly knew more than I did. – Mmm-hmm, just do a set with that, see if there’s anything there. – They really messed up. – Yeah? Going up? – They were really messed up
to do that to me and blame me. They were messed up. – That’s good, go with that. (both inhaling)
(both exhaling) (Jamie S. exhaling) (Jamie S. inhaling) What are you noticing now? – They were the ones.
– Yeah. – They tried to confuse me.
– Mmm-hmm. – It worked.
– Mmm-hmm. – A long time.
– Yeah. Where would you rate
the distress right now? Zero, no distress or neutral, when you go back to target? 10, the worst you can imagine. – It’s a zero. It was them, it wasn’t me. – Yeah. Cool, so, let’s check in with the cognition.
– Mm-hmm. – So, when we began,
(papers rustling) the general positive cognition was, I am okay. I was a kid. There was a couple other things you said. Now that we’ve done the work, is there a positive
cognition that has come up that you can believe
instead of it’s my fault? Is it still, I’m okay, or
is there something else that has come up, that feels even better? – I’m okay, still, just– – Okay. And how true, at your gut level, does that feel in this
moment, one to seven? One is completely false,
seven is completely true. – Say it, it’s pretty sound, pretty much seven, maybe a tad bit. – Okay, so let’s–
– Maybe a 6.8. – Let’s go with that, 6.8, and see if anything pops
up for us on this set. What are you noticing now? – I’m okay. – Seven?
– Mmm-hmm. – Completely true? – Yeah, it’s completely true. – Alright, so let’s install. Let’s place that positive
belief of, I am okay, together with that original worst part, notice what you notice. What are you getting, Jamie? – I’m okay. – Okay, all right. So let’s go on the body scan. So now that the positive
belief has been installed, I’d like you to scan your
body, from head to toe. What are you noticing? – Much more relaxed.
– Okay. – And there’s some
tension in my upper arms. – Maybe just go with that
tension in the upper arms. (Jamie S. exhaling) What are you getting? – I’m ready for a nap. – Okay. Okay. Just notice that sensation
in your body, as you, I find that’s a common
experience after EMDR. – Mm-hmm. – Wanting to rest like that. Relax. (Jamie S. exhaling) And what are you noticing now? – I’m relaxed.
– Okay. So, I’m going to invite you now to hold that sensation, relaxed. Would you overall say the
body scan feels pretty clear? – Mmm-hmm.
– Okay, so hold that clear body scan, together with the original target, and the positive belief of I am okay. See what you notice. Breath. (both inhaling)
(both exhaling) – What are you getting now, Jamie? – I’m good. – All right. So let’s move into formally closing down our session here. First question I have, and you
can take the earphones off, keep ’em to the side just in case we need to go into anything. Do you have any questions for me, about what you experienced? – Only because I’ve experienced before, I am aware of how quickly
things can be processed. That seems like something that I’d ask. A long time ago–
– Sure. – Whenever the first session was– – Sure–
– That’s it? I spent how many sessions of talk therapy (both laughing) and then it is, that’s it?
– Yeah, yeah. – Something I do remember,
just from before, too, is that many times after talking, only about something upsetting, it would take me three to
five days before I’d feel – Yeah.
– Normal– – Sure.
– Feel like I’m a better, I think before everything settled. – Mmm-hmm. – And even as intense as some
of the EMDR sessions can be, usually within 24 hours, I feel good. – Cool. – And I attribute that to the
stuff truly being processed, instead of just riled up again. – That’s a really good distinction. So I really like that distinction. So, as you know processing can continue. After the session, you may continue to have some thoughts,
images, even dreams. Completely normal. I would encourage you to continue using your skills that you have. Your breath skill, I think
is a beautiful one to access. Drawing, journaling, and of course, you can be in contact with me if you need, and I would like to hear
from you, after kind of that, at least that 24 hour
threshold that you described, just to see how you’re doing. Now do you feel that we need to review any of your
preparation skills or safe skills before you leave today? – I’ve been in my magical
safe place (laughing) the whole time.
– Okay. – I found that very helpful. – That’s interesting. So even in that magical safe place, you were able to do this processing? – Mmm-hmm.
– Great. – Because it helps the little ones– – Yeah.
– Understand– – Mmm-hmm.
– Or feel safe– – Mmm-hmm.
– Because some of the memories can seem so real.
– Yeah. – Like it’s happening–
– Mmm-hmm. – And somehow we’ve come
to the understanding, that in the magical safe place, it is truly a memory that we can process, so it’s not a problem anymore. – Sure. – Whereas if, when we
attempted to do things before magical safe place, then sometimes, stuff got
just too scary, too real. – Yeah. – And there wasn’t something there to, I don’t know exactly how to explain it. – It seemed to work.
– Yeah, it works. – Yeah.
– Great. – Very nice. So, where we would go from here, we’ll see how you do after this session, after you check in again, reminding you to use your skills, specifically magical safe
place and the breath, or anything else that we’re worked on. And then my sense is,
the next time we meet, we would check in with this target, to see if everything has held. And then, specifically because your intent was to work on issues of food coming in. – Mm-hmm.
– But you’ve made the connection here. My thought is to go into more
of the future template work, where we would actually bring up an issue, more directly connected to food. And we would see how, I’m
okay, holds up with that. And see what other layers of work we need, gotten into. – Guess that’s.
