Derrickson memorial scholarships awarded for 2021

In this season of gratitude, it seems appropriate to remind the community of the Geoff & Ken Derrickson Memorial Scholarship, which helps first responders and their family members with post-secondary education expenses. Now in its fourth year, the scholarship has been established by Betsy Baumeister and Bob Derrickson to honor the lives of their sons Ken and Jeff Derrickson, twin brothers who died separated at a young age.

Never forgetting the support and care their family received from Rehoboth first responders, Baumeister and Derrickson founded the scholarship as a thank you for helping local first responders.

The 2021 winners are Claire Sullivan and Jaden Hughes. Sullivan received a prize of $5,000; She studies criminal justice at the University of Delaware. Hewes took home a $2,500 prize. He studies business administration at Webber State University in Ogden, Utah.

This spring, up to $10,000 in scholarship assistance will be awarded to one or more recipients. Members of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Department or the Rehoboth Beach Police Department and their families are eligible.

Eligibility is also open to junior fire department members and seasonal police cadets. For applications, go to rehobothbeachfire.com or through your local high school counselors. Applications for the 2022 scholarship are due by Thursday, April 14.

Teens ages 15-18 who wish to become junior members of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company can apply at rehobothbeachfire.com. The City of Rehoboth Beach is currently recruiting for summer 2022 season students. For more information and applications, go to cityofrehobothbeach.com.

“The Scholarship Fund was created to show appreciation to our local first responders, who are always there for all of us,” Baumeister said. “We are pleased to help members and families of the Rehoboth Fire Department and the Rehoboth Beach Police Department advance their education.”
