Laura teaches second grade at Elliott Ranch Elementary School.
ELK GROVE, CA – Laura Anderson teaches second grade at Elliot Ranch Elementary School in Elk Grove. ABC10 asked Laura a few questions about her teaching career. This is what she had to say:
How long have you been teaching?
7 years at Elliott Ranch.
Who was your favorite teacher growing up?
Miss Mifsud was one of my third grade teachers and my teacher’s tutor when I started teaching. I couldn’t tell you one academic thing I learned in third grade, but I do remember wanting to be in school and absolutely love being in her class. Being my mentor made everything come full circle for me and she is still the teacher I look up to today.
What is your favorite student success story?
I think the amazing thing about elementary school teaching is that there are so many student successes big and small every day. I’ve taught first grade for 5 years and a lot of kids start the year not yet read, and eventually become full readers! Watching the growth over the course of one academic year, not just in skill, but in confidence, is truly amazing.
What is your advice to future teachers of America?
Get a blessing for yourself, your students, and the families you work with, and find a good work-life balance! It is very easy to get caught up in everything you can do in your classroom and in your school. As teachers, we can be so passionate about our students that we lose sight of our lives outside the classroom, and that’s how burnout happens. Make sure to make time for yourself, your friends and family. Taking care of yourself outside the classroom will make you a better teacher in the classroom.
What is your advice to parents?
Keep doing what you’re doing by supporting your child and their teacher! We are all on the same team and have the same goal: to have happy, healthy students and do our best for them.
Congratulations once again to ABC10’s December 2021 Teacher of the Month, Laura Anderson!
