Last year, three Coquitlam teens received Beedie Luminaries – a scholarship for those with college aspirations facing “life’s challenges and adversity”.
Katya Kubyshkin’s life was changed forever earlier this year as her post-high school endeavors suddenly became a reality.
Teen Coquitlam was one of 112 students in the district to receive a $40,000 Beedie Luminaries Scholarship, which is being used for her education at UBC after she graduated from Pinetree High School last summer.
She said in a statement sent to Tri City News.
“The Beedie Luminaries Scholarship took my wildest dreams and made them within reach.”
She applied, along with Ethem Gulseren (Port Coquitlam) and Gaeun Nam (Coquitlam), for the 2021 round of Beedie Luminaries, which distributed over $5.1 million to 12th graders.
Now, the organization has 105 scholarships up to 2022 in which they hope to reach those who “face financial barriers” and who also wish to achieve higher education at a university, college or public trade school anywhere in British Columbia.
“In addition to demonstrating academic readiness, recipients also shared compelling personal stories of adversity and resilience as well as a strong track record of contributing to their families and communities,” a statement from Beedie Luminaries said.
The scholarship fund started with a base of $50 million from Ryan Beedie in 2018.
Among the recipients in 2021, more than 70 percent live in rental or social housing, 75 percent are single-parent families or foster families, and 35 percent are the first post-secondary in their household.
In addition to the money, Tri-City students selected for the scholarship will also be paired with paid mentors and internship opportunities, Committed to the path Student support and invitations to special events and access to the online Beedie Luminaries community.
A virtual open house is also scheduled to learn more about the program on Thursday (November 25).
Grade 12 students who are set to graduate in 2022 and are interested in applying for the scholarship can do so by visiting the Beedie Luminaries website.
The deadline for applications is 9am on January 13, 2022.
The organization also has a secondary application process, known as SPARK, for single parents who wish to return to school, which is set to open publicly in March 2022.
