Broadway Advocacy Coalition’s Cody Renard Richard Scholarship Opens Applications for 2022 Cycle

The Cody Renard Richards Scholarship Program of the Broadway Advocacy Alliance is accepting applications for another course. The programme, which was launched last year, aims to support the next generation of BIPOC theater makers working behind the scenes.

Selected participants receive a $5,000 scholarship and work sessions focused on leadership, community building, social justice, and mentorship. This year’s scholars will also receive an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City for personal guidance.

Applicants are required to submit a one-minute video essay describing why they are an ideal candidate for the programme, a current transcript, and two letters of recommendation. Applications will be accepted until December 5 at 11:59 PM ET, and selected scholars will be notified by late December. You can find the application here.

“What started as a dream has become something much bigger than I could ever have imagined,” Richard says. “Our inaugural group has taught me so much. They reminded me of the true strength of the community and how important it is to be intentional about the spaces we create. I am so grateful for building on the foundation of our first year by providing more resources to these future leaders in our industry.”

The program’s inaugural year distributed $60,000 to 15 researchers who participated in working sessions with Richard, Zylon Livingston, Nicole Brewer, Shell Williams, Clint Ramos, Brian Moreland, and other industry leaders.

“The program has given me something that I can only dream of,” says researcher Brillian Qi Bell for 2020-2021. “For the first time in my life, I had access to mentors of color and a group of friends who were people of color in an industry behind the scenes. I often feel lonely for being the only person of color in the room. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to feel safe and understand my colleagues.”
