Last Monday morning, November 22, 2021, Israel Cumberbatch of St. Vincent Grammar School received a scholarship from a group known as the Boobies Boys. The scholarship is $1,200.00 EC per year and will be for the period of time at St Vincent Grammar School.
According to Education Minister Curtis King who provided the scholarship to Cumberbatch at the school, two students are currently receiving scholarships from the Boobies Boys, Israel Cumberbatch and Marcus Adams.
He explained that the group arose when most of the young people who lived in the 1970s and 1980s in the Upper Belair region immigrated to North America, the Caribbean and Europe.
“Most of the time guys use lime on a corner at the top of Gomea called Boobies Corner. There was a shopkeeper near the corner and she was referring to them as Boobies Boys, and she was saying ‘Here come Boobies Boys,’ so the name stuck out,” King explained.
He said that these young people seriously practiced their Christian faith, kept in touch with each other, and a few years ago, they all gathered for a reunion to celebrate the group’s 50th anniversary.
Education Minister King noted that during the meeting, “a number of initiatives were agreed upon; one of them was the provision of a scholarship to a secondary student. This scholarship scheme was drawn up four years ago. At the time, it was felt that one scholarship would be sufficient.”
However, since the first scholarship was awarded, the group was established as a non-profit organization, and decided to increase the number of scholarships to two.
King’s connection came about because “…he used to hang out with them, and he’s been part of the group for as long as I can remember.”
Although not the local responsible person for the group, King is part of a group of men based in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines who maintain contact with the group and organize any local activities on behalf of the group.
