Beedie scholarship lifts weight off shoulders of Richmond grad

Application for the Beedie Scholarship is now open and Grade 12 students in British Columbia are encouraged to apply.

AR McNeil High School graduate Amy Jo felt “happy tears” when she learned that she had recently received her $40,000 Bedi scholarship.

Other young people are now invited to apply for the scholarship, which is awarded annually through the Beedie Luminaries Foundation.

As for Guo, who was one of 112 class 12 graduates last year across the province to get the scholarship, she lifted her weight off her shoulders.

“I still remember getting a phone call from the Beedie Luminaries—I was so shocked and ecstatic… I still remember running immediately into the action-packed living room to tell my parents the good news,” said Guo.

“The tears were happy,” she added.

Guo is currently a first year commerce student at the UBC Sauder School of Business.

She said the scholarship opened up opportunities for her, allowing her to make a smoother transition from high school to living on campus.

“With this financial rise, instead of working many hours per week in a part-time job, I can focus on academics and participate in school clubs that align with my interests and values.”

Since 2018, philanthropist and developer Ryan Beedie has given $50 million through his foundation to help young people achieve academic success and contribute to society despite facing adversity in life.

Gu pointed out that when faced with challenges, speaking out loud is not easy, but she encourages her peers to reach out for help.

“It takes a lot of courage to speak out about your challenges, but fear not, you are definitely not alone. There are a lot of people willing to listen to your story. There are also many opportunities to receive financial assistance,” Joe said.

The application period for the Beedie Scholarships is now open and Grade 12 BC students facing financial barriers are encouraged to apply. For more information, visit https://beedieluminaries.ca/. Applications close on January 13, 2022.
